Why the church sits half below ground
Căușeni belonged to the Ottoman raya of Bugeac. Ottoman law limited the height and size of Christian churches, so this one was built partly below ground.
Local tradition says the Tatar rulers allowed construction only if the church stayed no taller than a mounted soldier with a spear. This is a legend, not a documented fact.
Founders, paintings and the centuries since
The founders are named as Grigore Callimachi, ruler of Moldavia, and Metropolitan Daniil of Proilavia. The interior paintings date from 1763 and are the work of Stanciul Radu and Voicu.
A tower with a cross was added in 1807. In Soviet times the building served as a warehouse and then as an industrial space, which damaged the frescoes. It received monument status in 1983.
The restoration and the 2024 reopening
In the 2020s the church was restored with the help of the Ministry of Culture. The US Embassy in Chișinău contributed one million dollars through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.
The church reopened in 2024. It is a heritage building, but also a place of worship, not only a sight.
