A short history: from customs post to Ottoman fortress
Tighina is first mentioned as a customs post on 6 October 1408. The first fortification was of earth and wood, from the time of Stephen the Great.
In 1538 Suleiman the Magnificent took it, renamed it Bender and had it rebuilt in stone to a design by the architect Sinan. The work ended in 1541. Between 1705 and 1707 Antioh Cantemir strengthened it with 10 bastions and 11 towers.
Why Bender is a special case today
Since 1991 the fortress has been controlled by the de facto authorities of the Transnistrian region, which restored it in 2008–2012. The UK government notes that the region is outside the control of the Moldovan government.
There is no official border, but the control points are run by the de facto authorities, and consular help is very limited.
Documents and checkpoint: what official advice says
This is how the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) describes the procedure. We could not confirm it from an official Moldovan source, and it can change without notice.
- Passports are checked but not stamped.
- On entry you fill in two copies of a migration card and keep one for the exit.
- The passport needs at least one blank page and must be valid for 3 months after you leave Moldova.
- Officers may ask the purpose of your visit and where you will stay, and may deny entry.
Safety advice and how to behave
The UK government advises against all travel to Transnistria because of military activity in Ukraine. The US State Department says to reconsider travel and warns that photographing military facilities or security forces is not allowed and can lead to detention.
We could not verify the opening hours or the ticket price from an official source. Ask on site or at a local agency.
Before you set off, check your own government's advice and the Moldovan Border Police.
